The Ambassadors programme is funded and actively supported by the Office for Civil Society (OCS). The programme was originally announced in the government's Social Enterprise Action Plan, published in November 2006. The programme remains a central part of OCS’ work with social enterprise.

As part of the Cabinet Office, OCS leads work across government to support the environment for a thriving third sector (voluntary and community groups, social enterprises, charities, cooperatives and mutuals), enabling the sector to campaign for change, deliver public services, promote social enterprise and strengthen communities.

It is worth noting that, though this is a government-funded programme, the Ambassadors are not representatives of the government, but broadly representative of the social enterprise movement.
